Dark, ethereal score that weaves a solid horrific tapestry.

I must admit I have a soft spot in my heart for the Halloween movie soundtracks. There is just something comforting to me about the familiar piano theme for Michael Myers. That being said, Tyler Bates is back in force to score Rob Zombie's latest installment -- Halloween II.

Bates makes a dark ethereal entrance with low rumbling frequencies that quickly dives into the main theme. I like what he has done here. There is a bit of a tinny sounding twang to the familiar theme that also includes ambient moaning and wooshing. It is something that has not been done before with the Michael Myers theme and really adds additional depth to the simple piano key strokes. There is also a cool echoing thump that adds a nice subtle texture.

We are then brought into the dark mind of Michael Myers; a repetitive mix of soft chanting, deep percussion and an almost popping sound with fading glimmers. This combination definitely evokes a feeling of madness.

The score continues onward with this dark ethereal theme but seems consistently fresh and never gets tiring. Occassionally the score introduces some ticking or popping sounds that may be annoying to some listeners. I do not know if this was intended or a symptom of a low quality digital recording *note* to labels sending us promo scores, please send us full discs with artwork for a proper review :-) I actually do not mind the popping sounds because they enhance the sound that no doubt works well with the film, almost like something is scratching you softly, you don't mind it at first, but then it starts to eat into your flesh.

Overall Halloween II is a solid composition by Bates. I listened to this in the dark and found myself looking over my shoulder at least twice to make sure there was nobody behind me with a machete getting ready to strike. If it can do that to me, it will no doubt give you the chills as well. The pulse pounding tapestry of horrific moodiness that Bates has weaved will no doubt get a few plays out of me. While some people may think it is 50 minutes of repetitive electronic noise, others will find a nice display of madness that creates a sense of urgent terror - no doubt some poor victim trying to escape the clutches of pure evil (Rob Zombie's mind that is). Now that October 31st is right around the corner I'll make sure this gets a few more plays.

To note one downside, the main Myers theme only appears in the titles of the score. I was a bit disappointed by that because it could have really added that familiarness to when Michael is stalking his prey, I mean victims - the pounding is an OK replacement, but not memorable. After Bates' disaster with Watchmen (sorry Tyler I hated it) this is a nice recovery for what had to be a very difficult style film to score.
