Reviewed by Scott - Grade: B Nostalgiac score for the true collector, but modern fans of Mark Snow may be disappointed.
"More than a myth. Less than a legend. And a bit too big for his boots..." Thus became the movie Jake Speed in 1986. Pretty much a rip off of
Romancing the Stone, this is one of those 80's movies that played late night on cable in the 90's and then mysteriously disappeared. Composer Mark Snow was
tapped for the score and it was the first score he composed in his brand new in-home studio on Synclair electronic machines.
For those that have seen the film you will note the trademark pan flute jingle that echoes throughout with a packaged mix of percussion, flute, guitar and bass synth mixed in with customized sounds.
This score is really for a true fan of the film or those true movie soundtrack collectors...It is 80's electronica at its best and is really a great score to experience with good replay value. By far Snow's best work in my opinion is
Millennium but Jake Speed is definitely his #2 (yes even over X-Files). Go rent the movie, then maybe...just maybe you'll want Jake's adventures to continue on even long after the pulsating End Titles have concluded. Mark Snow's score allows us to keep Jake Speed alive even today.
