Reviewed by James - Grade: C Not one of Horner's best, but a pretty solid achievement considering the circumstances.
When Warner Brothers began previewing Troy, the film did not pick up the raves they were expecting. Instead of blaming the film itself (which has a lot of problems), the executives zeroed in on one thing they could change quickly: Gabriel Yared's score, which they dismissed as old fashioned. So out goes Gabriel Yared and in comes Horner, who was given about two weeks to write, record, and mix the replacement score.
So let's get right into it. Troy is not a great score. Horner is accused of being unoriginal when he has plenty of time to write (i.e. Avatar). What do you think would happen if he is given just two weeks? Unsurprisingly, he breaks out the old tricks and assembles a new score from pieces of his old ones. The biggest example of this is his reliable old four note danger motif that has made an appearance in most of his scores. Only this time, the danger motif is not a small piece of the music; now it is one of the central ideas of the entire score-I think of it is as the theme for the Greek army.
But is the score a waste of time because it is unoriginal? Not necessarily. It can still be exciting, and Horner proves again that he can put together some of the most exciting action music out there. "Achilles Leads the Myrmidons," "The Greek Army and its Defeat," and "The Trojans Attack" have some truly thrilling action music, and it all makes for an entertaining listen. The love theme also is quite lovely. Though it sounds a bit too reminiscent to Stargate, I still like the way it is used in this score, particularly its climactic swelling in "Through the Fires, Achilles and Immortality."
I also have to give Horner some credit where credit is due. For two weeks worth of work, this is pretty solid stuff. And for the most part, it really is quite effective in the film itself. It is not a great score, and not something that gets heavy rotation in my CD player, but it is way better than it could have or should have been.
