Reviewed by James - Grade: A Star Trek VI is among the best in the series. So what is the big problem?
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is one of the most disappointing and frustrating scores in the Trek franchise. So why am I still awarding the score with an "A" rating, you ask? Well, we'll get to that in a minute. First, let me tell you more about exciting score.
First off all, I like the movie itself. Star Trek VI is one of the darkest of the series, a complex and brooding political thriller directed by Nicholas Meyer, who had previously helmed Wrath of Khan. Just as with Khan, Meyer found a young up-and-coming composer to provide the music - in this case, Cliff Eidelman. Eidelman proved to be up to the task and wrote an appropriately dark and brooding score.
From the very first track, "Overture," we know something is different. This is not the adventurous Trek that Goldsmith and Horner gave us. This is depressing, apocalyptic material. And yet still just as thrilling as those earlier classics. While the score has its warm moments (his Enterprise theme, best heard in "Clear All Moorings," has a great friendship vibe to it), it will be remembered for its powerhouse action cues. From the dark chorus and intense bass rhythms of "Assassination" to the lengthy, edge-of-your-seat climactic cue "Battle for Peace," Eidelman writes some of the most thrilling action music of the franchise, arguably just as good as Khan's now classic battle music.
Overall, is the score as good as Motion Picture and Wrath of Khan? Definitely not. It comes down to the themes for me. Eidelman's are good. Goldsmith's and Horner's are legendary. But this should not take away from the quality of this score - a must have for any science fiction music buff.
So now back to that important question. Why is Star Trek VI the most disappointing and frustrating Star Trek score? Because it really is that good, and Eidelman's career for some bizarre reason did not take off. Despite the brutal and powerful music in Star Trek VI, Eidelman found himself typecast in the women's picture genre. Sure, it's a steady paycheck and he does effective work, but when action movies today have some of the crappiest music, why is Eidelman being wasted on He's Just Not That Into You and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants? It is deeply frustrating and disappointing! I don't get it!
