One of the greatest science fiction scores. Ever.

In the wake of Giacchino's "Star Trek" score, I felt it might be time to go back and write up reviews for the rest of the franchise's musical canon. A lot of well-regarded music has been written, but is it the never-ending fountain of genius some people associate with Trek? Since I grew up with the movies and music, was I actually giving them a fair appraisal? I thought I had best be objective and go back - and figured I might as well start with the beginning with Jerry Goldsmith's "Star Trek: the Motion Picture."

So is "Star Trek: the Motion Picture" all its cracked up to be? The answer is a RESOUNDING YES. There really is not a weak spot in this diverse and brilliant score. It really does have a little bit of everything.

You want a rousing Main Title march? Goldsmith gives it to you. The impact of this majestic and adventurous theme might have diminished over time (mostly because we saw it every week in the opening credits for the Next Generation TV show), but it still ranks as the best Main Theme in the series and one of the best of the genre period. The reason why I give it the slight edge of the opening titles in "Wrath of Khan" is because of its versatility. Meant to represent the Enterprise itself, the theme can be broken in half and incorporated into other themes and motifs. It can be bent and molded with small note changes to create a different mood and still evoke the Enterprise. And most importantly, it does not need to be played as a rousing march. The standout track in the entire score is "The Enterprise," a six-minute rendition of the theme, played slowly, lovingly, and slowly building to an amazing climax when we see the iconic ship for the first time in the movie. Stirring violins and soaring harps make it clear that the heart of this theme is the love Kirk has for his ship. It's an awe-inspiring moment, and I encourage you to give it a good listen.

Beyond the theme, what do we have? A more traditional love theme? Check. "Ilia's Theme" is the technically the real love theme of the movie, and it is beautiful. You want cool action music? How about "Klingon Battle" or "Spock Walk," both heart-pounding cues that go among the top of the series. You want mystery? I give you the mysterious and purposefully meandering music for Vejur, best heard in "The Cloud" and "Vejur Flyover." Some brilliant stuff. And how about "The Meld"? This music not only represents the melding of Vejur with a human, but also the bizarre melding of the love theme, the Vejur theme, and the main title music.

So where does it rank? It's the best Star Trek score, certainly in the top five science fiction scores and top five Goldsmith scores. It's just a masterpiece. If you are like me and haven't heard "Star Trek: the Motion Picture" in awhile, then I encourage you to throw it back in the CD player so you can re-discover its awesomeness.
