More Soundtracks by Jerry Goldsmith
Reviewed by James - Grade: B While its not the blockbuster masterpiece we were all hoping for, this is still a solid action score.
Back in 2002, fans were approaching "Star Trek: Nemesis" with tentative optimism. "Insurrection" had been a big step in the wrong direction, and the franchise was committed to making the next film awesome. Early word seemed positive. The writers and producers all said they hoped to evoke "Wrath of Khan," and Patrick Stewart even said he felt the script was the best Next Gen script he had read. Optimism also spread in the film music community, with soundtrack label Varese Sarabande stating that Jerry Goldsmith's music was a knockout punch and probably his best Trek score since the "The Motion Picture."
I'm sure everyone remembers the severe sense of disappointment when "Nemesis" was actually released. A frenzy of bad filmmaking, bad writing, and some really bad ideas, "Nemesis" was the film that destroyed the franchise. That disappointment passed over to the score, as well. Some liked it, but no one loved it. And a lot of reviews said the first half was sort of boring, while the second half was sort of fun. "Sort of fun" is not the same as a knockout punch.
I was one of those people. I was profoundly disappointed. But in revisiting the score today, I realize that the score was mostly a victim of 1) it's own hype, and 2) the disappointment that carried over from that horrible movie. Listening to it now, I can appreciate it more. The first half of the CD is still the slower part. There is a harsh atmosphere of impending doom, played most effectively in tracks like "The Box" and "Remus." This isn't always the easiest material to listen to on CD, but it is far from boring. But then the second half rolls in, and we really are treated to some kickass action material. The highlights are probably "Scorpion" and "Lateral Run," and they are among the more exciting action cues Goldsmith has written for the Trek franchise.
So really what it comes down to is this: now that the crappy memories of the film itself are out of my head, I am able to enjoy the music more. I admit, there is still some disappointment. This still isn't a knockout punch. And since it was one of the Maestro's final scores, I still wish he had been able to come out swinging with a masterpiece.
What is here is good stuff, and in the case of the action material, it's very good stuff. Maybe Varese Sarabande was right about it being the best Goldsmith Trek score since the original. I certainly think it is stronger than both "First Contact" and "Insurrection." I have not revisited "Final Frontier" yet, so we'll see about that one. But "Nemesis" is a strong score, and worth revisiting.
