Hands down the weakest of Goldsmith's Trek scores.

I struggled with this review, probably more than any other review I've had to write. Why? Well, if the score had been amazing or an absolute disaster then I would have had plenty to write about. The problem is "Star Trek: Insurrection" is that it is neither. It is bland and very forgettable. And that is most disappointing, especially considering this score came from Trek's most reliable composer Jerry Goldsmith.

It is not that the score is bad. As I listen to the music, I find much of it to be well-written and well thought-out. The main romantic theme is a pretty piece, if a bit hokey. "Children's Story" is genuinely a pretty cue, with lush instrumentation. It is probably the best two minutes on the CD.

Maybe Goldsmith wrote the score the movie deserved? When I watched the film, I felt it was the equivalent of a subpar episode of TNG; it certainly felt nothing like a movie. And if the film felt like a bland, subpar television episode, then Goldsmith made sure to give it the bland, subpar television score it deserved.

I have heard people praise this score, some going so far as saying it is almost as good as "Motion Picture." They refer to a promo soundtrack with extended cues and much important and stunning music that is sorely missing from the Crescendo release. That music makes all the difference, they claim. Maybe. But I have trouble seeing that. The score is so unmemorable that I doubt anything could- Wait, what was I listening to again?
