Not Goldsmith's best, but certainly a worthy entry into the series.

For the second wave of Star Trek films, starring the Next Generation crew, the producers first decided to experiment with the series' primary composer, Dennis McCarthy. There was some debate about the "Generations" score at the time; some truly embraced it while others felt it lacked that special cinematic touch. As if to answer the pleas of the latter, the producers brought back the original and best Trek composer, Maestro Jerry Goldsmith, who would go on to score the remaining Next Gen films.

Whether you liked McCarthy's "Generations" or not, it is hard to argue that "First Contact" isn't a big upgrade. While not a classic, "First Contact" is a solid entry into the canon, with some exciting action material, a powerful new theme for the Borg (best heard in the track "Red Alert"), and a noble new main title that has become a compilation album favorite. Standout cues include a bleak "Retreat" (actually written by Goldsmith's son, Joel) and the truly beautiful "First Contact" which presents us with some awe-inspiring string work that no one could write as well as the Maestro. It is definitely the album highlight.

If there is a problem with the score, it is that it feels disjointed to me. Maybe it is how the cues are arranged, but I feel like the score has no momentum. It doesn't build throughout or lead us to an exciting climax. Musically, "First Contact" is probably better than the later "Nemesis," but as a listening experience I feel "Nemesis" is the better balanced album, effectively building the tension into some exciting climactic action cues. "First Contact" just feels kind of disconnected with itself, and that makes it hard for us as listeners to connect with the score. I'm not sure who to blame for that.

It also makes it hard to rank. In a grumpy mood, I would give the score a C because it just does not gel together despite some highlights. But then I start thinking about those highlights, such as "Red Alert" "Retreat," "First Contact," and the clever Borg theme, and that puts me in a better disposition. I think I'll give it a B!
