"I still talk to God sometimes, I ask him if what I'm doing is right or wrong, I'm still waiting for an answer, and until I get one, I'll be waiting, watching, THE GUILTY WILL BE PUNISHED!" - Frank Castle (aka The Punisher)

This is far and away the best movie Dolph Lundgren ever did. There can be no other Frank Castle. He embodied the character perfectly in the film and really brought a dark stoic edge to the character that the Punisher so well deserves. A nice gem of a find, this soundtrack is one that I have always wanted to add to my collection, and finally, thanks to Perseverance records, it is a reality. I rated this score an 8 out of 10 because of the sheer wealth of goodies that come with it. The CD liner notes are more of a booklet than anything else and go into great detail about the history of the movie, how the master tapes were restored for this release, and many pages regarding how various scenes from the film were scored.

In fact, as an added bonus, there are 7 tracks totaling over 15 minutes of an interview with Composer Dennis Dreith and Director Mark Goldblatt. It is a pretty solid interview and gives you insight into how the studios were working in the late 80's moving into the 90's. So, given that you get 39 total tracks for over 1 hour, 19 minutes and 26 seconds, how is the music? It's the Punisher!

Dreith manages to bring a true comic book feel to the score. There are a host of string instruments, trumpets and horns that provide a sometimes repetitive course of gun shooting, knife stabbing, throat slitting action. Once we are introduced to Tanaka, asian influenced instruments become a part of the score and continue to take us on castle's killing spree. At times it sounds a little like Big Trouble in Little China, but without the comic undertone of the score. This is due mainly to the high riffs and percussion that echo consistently in a few of the tracks.

The main theme for the punisher is a chorus of strings and a trumpet that have 4 notes...bum-bah-bum-bah. If you know the movie, you know what I am talking about. This appears from time to time during the score, and you can almost feel Castle's mark left behind. As far as comic book movie scores go, I would give this score a 6 out of 10 because it does get repetitive. But you have to pick this one up because it immediately goes to an 8 with the volume of material. It has really good bonuses and you get the Punisher theme along with it. Bum-bah-bum-baaaaah....
