"Nine," is the new musical directed by Rob Marshall ("Chicago") and featuring an all star cast including Daniel Day-Lewis, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz and Sophia Loren. Based on the Broadway musical which is in turn based on Fellini's classic "8 1/2," "Nine" is a bit of mixed bag. First, the negative. The biggest problem, with both the CD and the musical, is that the songs just aren't that good. I know this is blashemy for fans of the stage show, but these songs just are no memorable or interesting. Oh, there are some nice moments - the lullaby "Guarda La Luna" is a sweet, little piece, "Cinema Italiana" has a cool, funky vibe, and I do like that the Opening Credits evoke Nina Rota, who wrote the score to Fellini's original film. But other than that, these songs just aren't that great.
Now, there are two exceptions to this, and they are big exceptions. First, we have "Be Italian," which has the virtue of being the ONLY song with a good hook. It's a showstopper, and it's written as such and performed as such by popstar Fergie. The other exception is "My Husband Makes Movies," which is a beautiful song full of longing and pain - but more on that in a minute!
I know one question everyone has is how do these actors sound? None of them are singers, so I know audiences have been curious. Overall, I think they all acquit themselves quite nicely. First off, Daniel Day-Lewis as Guido - he has a stronger voice than I anticipated and I give him credit for being able to maintain his Italian accent while singing. Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, and Kate Hudson all put in good work and you can hear in their voices how much fun they are having. Fergie, as I mentioned, brings much power and gusto to her song. But the performance of the CD for me comes from Marion Cotillard in "My Husband Makes Movies." She doesn't perform the song. She ACTS it. Her voice cracks with emotion. The sadness and loneliness rings crystal clear through with her voice. It is a heart-wrenching cue and the highlight of the album.
I do want to mention that Marshall and Co. apparently changed quite a bit from the Broadway show. I think this is important for those of you who might want to buy the CD because of their love for the original. I don't want you to be surprised. A few of the songs are new, including "Cinema Italiano." And apparently there are several songs from the play that did not ultimately end up in the movie, including ironically the title cue, "Nine." Which is just weird, and probably disappointing to some of the fans out there.
All in all, not a great CD. Unless you are a fan of the musical, you are not going to like the songs because they are mostly dull. If you are a fan of the musical, be warned because some of your favorites might be missing. But I do think it is worth going to iTunes and grabbing those tracks that speak to you. "Be Italian" and "My Husband Makes Movies" will be ending on my playlist for sure.
